Why I Make My Bed Every Morning

by mzumtaylor on October 23, 2010

I work 40 hours a week most weeks, and another 10-15 hours a week on creating this blog and building a business. Never mind the 10-15 hours a week that I spend working on my relationships with the people I love and care about, and of course the 56-60 hours I spend asleep.

That doesn’t leave a lot of time for the rest of the details of life. My apartment is rarely picked up, I’m lucky if I get to read 10 pages in one of the six books I’ve started, I never remember to watch the shows I like, and life is pretty much hectic all the time. Which is honestly kind of how I like it. Otherwise I wouldn’t do this to myself, right?

But I make my bed every morning, I try to wash the dishes and keep the kitchen clean, and I update my checkbook (almost) every night. And I do these things because it means that there is always some small part of my world that is neat and organized. The rest of the world can be as crazy and chaotic as it wants to be, but with that small kernel of sanity, those few areas that I know are taken care of and not left undone, I am able to handle whatever comes my way.

It may seem silly, but having my bed made, having my dishes clean, knowing how much money we’ve got, knowing that those things are taken care of gives me a great sense of calm, which allows me to face the rest of the world head on.
