Saving & Planning: Our Honeymoon

by mzumtaylor on May 19, 2011

My husband and I have been married two years this March.

When we got married two years ago, we chose not to go on a Honeymoon because we weren’t able to afford it. We did the wedding without debt (and with a lot of help from our friends and family), and a Honeymoon just wasn’t in the cards at the time.

So what’s changed? A lot. We’ve moved across the country and started to put down roots. My husband has a solid job as a general manager of a restaurant, I am also steadily employed, hopefully long-term (I find out this month), and we’ve been able to meet or make significant progress toward several of our long-term money goals, including paying off our credit card debt.

I have a plan for the next three years. I’m not sure that the universe will let us stick to the plan, but I’ve got one, none-the-less. In the next three years, I’d like to plan and save for our Honeymoon, which will also be our first major (intercontinental) trip as a couple.

The first step will be to decide where we’re going. We both would love to visit the British Isles, so that’s currently top on the list, but really anywhere in Europe would be lovely. I mean, I’ve also wanted to see Greece and Rome, not to mention Spain, so… *shrugs* The Mediterranean does seems a more fitting destination for a couple in love, but… Ireland. Scottland. Wales. Our ancestors were from those places, and it would be fun to see what they’re like. So we’ll see.

The next step will be to look at currency exchanges, air fare rates, and suggested vacation months. I want to go when it’s lovely, but not when tens of thousands of other people will be there, too.

The third step will be to start saving. Figure out how much we’ll need to save in order to take this trip within the given time frame, and how that fits into our current budget.

I’m sure I’ll come up with other steps along the way, but that’s what I’ve got so far. I’ll keep you posted on what I discover, and if you have any good travel planning tips, I’d love to hear them.
