What I Learned About My Classes – Week 2

by Megan Taylor on August 31, 2012

Second week of classes is done and over with, and I have a few insights I want to capture for my future reference.

BUSN 6530: Data Analysis

What I Learned:

  1. Read, or at least skim, the textbook chapters before class. The professors accent is thick enough that if I don’t know what he’s talking about (in general), I get a little lost.
  2. I don’t need to have my book in this class, but it might be helpful to have it with me to review in the hour and a half before class.

BUSN 6540: Law for Business Majors

What I Learned:

  1. The instructor lays things out much more intuitively than the book, and doesn’t expect us to have read the chapter’s she’s covering until after the class in which she covers them (I asked).
  2. It is a good idea to read any examples included in the handouts before class.
  3. I do not need to bring my book to class. Any examples we are going to cover will be in the handouts the instructor provided on the first day of class.

BUSN 6550: Accounting for Business Majors

What I Learned:

  1. I definitely need to read the chapters that we’re going to cover in class before class. (This means I’m half a chapter behind, but I’ll catch up this long weekend.)
  2. I need to do all of the odd numbered exercises for the chapters that we cover in class, despite the fact that they’re not assigned. The material we cover doesn’t make much sense until I’ve had to apply it, and the problem sets at the ends of the chapters really helps.
  3. I should bring my computer to class, as well as a calculator.
  4. I may not need my book in class, but it’s still good to have.
  5. I need to figure out the best way to take notes.
    • Writing notes without having ready access to the powerpoint slides didn’t work (Week 1)
    • Printing the powerpoint and taking notes on it (3 slides to a page, notes format) didn’t work. I didn’t feel like I had enough space, but it was better than not having the powerpoint slides to reference at all.
    • I’m wondering if taking notes on my computer would work. It might be the best plan. I’ll have to try it next week.
