Loving my Sales and Negotiating Class

by Megan Taylor on June 4, 2014

I wasn’t 100% sure what to think after the first day of my Sales and Negotiating class. The professor outlined what we would be doing for the semester, which included two in-person sales calls (including all the necessary materials), role playing salary negotiations, and preparing a video interview. Just thinking of all the work that would likely be involved gave me heart palpitations.

But, with a little less than three weeks left in the semester, I have to say, I’m feeling pretty good about things. And, if the A’s I’ve been getting on assignments are anything to go by, my professor feels pretty good about how I’m doing too.

My favorite project so far has probably been the video interview, especially since the feedback my professor gave me was, “Well organized and an excellent effort. I would hire you in a minute!” I’m encouraged by that, and am sincerely hoping that, come August, there is a company out there whose accounting department feels the same way my professor does.

The assignment was:

You will be video-taping yourself as if interviewing with a recruiter who is hiring you for a position in your field. You will be expected to do the following: 1) Give an overview of yourself (“Tell me about yourself,”) 2) Explain how you are qualified (Choose 3 necessary skills for the position), and 3) Summarize and close the interview. The video should be no longer than 3 minutes. You are to submit a current copy of your resume along with your video.

When I asked if the video interview was kind of like a video cover letter, the professor said “Yes, exactly.”

I think I had I had it a little easier than some of my classmates, only because I am currently looking for an accounting job, and I had a cover letter and resume that I had recently send out that I could use to frame my video interview.

Here is the result:
