Mastering Excel: Wrote My First Macro

by Megan Taylor on September 12, 2014

It may not seem like a big thing to anyone else, but I just successfully programmed my first Macros (four of them!) in Excel. Well, the first ones I had to do outside of a class wherein I had step-by-step instructions.

I’d like to send a shout-out to Dr. San Miguel for teaching me the basics of Macro writing last semester in Accounting Info Systems. I’ve always wanted to know what Macros are and how to use them, and now I do.

For those of you who are curious what I programmed Excel to do, I am working on a project at my job where I have to check certain items in a separate program, and then mark them a different color in my spreadsheet depending on whether or not the items exist and what type of item they are. I’m up to six different colors of highlighting, and switching between them, well… the format painter button and Ctrl-Y or the F4 key only get you so far.

So now I have a keyboard shortcuts to highlight in the four colors I’ve been using most frequently, and I suspect it will save me a lot of time.

And now I can say that I have passed Master-level Excel use and headed down the path into Guru territory, which makes me happier than it probably should. image
