First Round of Volunteering: Accomplished

by Megan Taylor on October 4, 2014

As mentioned in a previous post, to qualify for membership for Beta Alpha Psi, I have to do 8 hours of community service and 20 hours of tutoring before the end of the current semester. At this last Thursday’s meeting, I signed up to volunteer today at a local food pantry, and in two weeks at a run/walk charity event. The latter should be fun (if potentially cold).

Today’s volunteering was fun. A little earlier than I normally am up and about on a Saturday, but I met some nice people, and got to know a few more of the people in my fraternity. We even got lunch at the end of our allotted time, which was nice of them, as we were all getting hungry, but didn’t know if it was okay for us to eat.

The biggest takeaway: if you’re going to donate food to a food pantry/soup kitchen, make sure it isn’t expired. We threw out I don’t know how many cans of food, with expiration dates back to 2003. Donating canned goods and the like is very generous and good, but if they’re expired, the soup kitchen is probably just going to throw them out anyway, so you should just save them the hassle.
